The Spanish Ballet of Cuba and its history
Led by Cuban Prime dancer and choreographer Eduardo Veitia, the Spanish Ballet of Cuba was born in April 1987.
At first, the creational group was named “Spanish Ballet of Havana” and by the end of 2000, due to the prestige reached in both the teaching and its artistic interpretation it was renamed as the Spanish Ballet of Cuba.
Thus, it became a national company. During the three decades of intense work, the Spanish Ballet of Cuba has been recognized as the greatest of its kind in the country.
The ballet has created its own style, based in respect and a serious inquiry into the technical and choreographic work within the Spanish dance panorama.
Its repertoire goes from classic to the most genuine flamenco fusion, using highly recognized works in the world dance panorama.
This remarkable company has had presentations in various Europe and America stages where it has received public recognition and the praise of the critics in the relevant festivals that it has participated.Currently, the Spanish Ballet of Cuba nourish from young graduates of its own Artistic Teaching Unit, which continues to form values of the Spanish dance in the island.
The Spanish Ballet of Cuba and its peculiarities
In the year 1994, under the management of Maestro Eduardo Veitia, the First Academy of Spanish Dance was created in Cuba.
The most important purpose of this school, even today, is to create new values to assume more ambitious, complex and with higher artistic quality repertoires.
Since its creation and until recently, this school functioned in the Gran Teatro de La Habana´ halls. The main styles of the Spanish Dance worked by the company are: the bolero school, Styling, Flamenco and regional dances.
The current repertoire includes titles like La Vida Breve (The Brief Life), Tras La Huella (On the Trail), Aquel Brujo Amor (That Wizard Love), La Casa Alba (The Alba House), Carmen, La Habana Valdés, La Última Zarzuela (The Last Zarzuela), El Fantasma (The Phantom), Danzando Sueños (Dancing Dreams), Clásico Embrujo Español (Classic Spanish Spell), Frida, among others.

The Spanish Ballet of Cuba has worked with important figures of the Spanish dance world such as: Trini Borrul, Goyo Montero, Emilio Sagi, Angel Fernández Montesino, José Antonio Ruiz, Pastora Matos, Manolo Marín, Victoria Eugenia, Johan Focsa, Antonio Jaén, Israel Galván, Eva la Hierbabuena, María Juncal, Antonio Falcón and others. Among the first dancers stand Leslie Ung Torrens, Graciela Santana and Daniel Martinez. Among its most notable international awards it is essential to mention the Second Place in the First International Contest of Choreography of Spanish Dance and Flamenco, in 1992 at the Alberniz Teather in Madrid Spain, among others.
As well in Cuba, the most important acknowledgments are The Recognition for the Tenth Anniversary of the UJC (Communist Youth Union) and the Gran Teatro de La Habana (Havana Great Theater), The Recognition of Friends of Ballet Circle, The Recognition of the Culture Ministry and the Scenic Arts Council and The Recognition for the Participation in the XIV Youth and Students World Festival.
