The History of Cuban Sport after 1959
At the time of the revolutionary triumph on January 1st, 1959 only 800 physical education teachers existed in Cuba.
With the subsequently emigration of professionals to the United States, this figure shrank significantly. To counter this situation, the new government issued emergency measures to promote the sport on the island.
We can say that the Cuban sport after 1959 burst with the founding of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER by the Spanish acronyms), on February 23rd, 1961.
This organism served since its creation as the main responsible for planning, directing and executing the programs of the various sporting activities throughout the country and in the international arena.
Under Marti’s precept of non-commercialization of sport the removal of professionalism was held in 1962. “The right of the people to practice sport” is disclosed as the slogan that would lead the Cuban sports movement, which also constitutes in principle of the Revolution.
Thus, vital importance was offered to the training and improvement of professional sports and the Schools of Physical Education (ESEF by its Spanish acronyms) were created for this purpose.
