This small island known as Cayo Guillermo, which belongs to CUBA, is part of the Jardines del Rey Archipelago, located north of Moron municipality in the province of Ciego de Avila, between Perros Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. This site with approximately 13 km2 of surface is recognized by the beauty of its more than 5 km of beach, characterized by the transparency of its waters, the almost total tranquility of its waves and the white color and very fine texture of its sand.
In Cayo Guillermo there are some dunes recognized as the highest in the Caribbean island with approximately 15 meters in height. They are located in Pilar Beach.
One of the attractions that motivates people to know Cayo Guillermo is that its beach Pilar inspired Ernest Hemingway to write his small novel The Old Man and the Sea.
To get to this natural place it is possible to do it by road following a stone road that connects the cay with the island of Cuba with an approximate journey of 27 km.
As important information is to know that Jardines del Rey has its own international airport located in Cayo Coco, both keys are connected by a bridge. From that air terminal to Cayo Guillermo are approximately 45 minutes by car.

Also in its calm waters there are some gorgonias and sponges and an extensive list of varieties of fish, some have compared it with an aquarium under the sea.
As for the fauna of Cayo Guillermo, the great flamingo colonies stand out in the visitor’s eyes.
But the fauna of the cay is not only admirable in the sea and the land, also in the air it is worth mentioning the more than 200 species of birds that inhabit this natural place.
Its vegetation is very well conserved, thanks to the distance of the destructive hand of the man. Its forests are tropical with a varied vegetation, predominating in its surroundings coconut trees, palm trees and mangroves.

Beaches of Cayo Guillermo

Without doubt, despite having 5km of calm crystalline waters and excellent sand, Pilar Beach is the most beautiful and attractive. From there you can see Media Luna (Half Moon), an ideal cay for lovers of diving.
To reach this site can be done by land by car, but also on a train that collects tourists a few times a day in hotels and then takes them back.
Also other beaches that tourists can enjoy are El Paso and Playa del Medio. In general the beaches of the Cuban cays have as characteristic its calm and crystalline waters and its white and fine sand. On this island there are also two marinas and two diving centers.
